Greentime Sustainability Certification

A practical sustainability certification for events – built for implementation, not paperwork.

Greentime is a sustainability certification used by festivals, sports events and public organizers to turn sustainability requirements into real, measurable action.

The certification combines a digital implementation tool with clear mandatory criteria and structured review – making sustainability work in practice, not just on paper.

What makes Greentime different

Many sustainability frameworks focus on policies, reporting or high-level ambition. Greentime is designed for real events, real teams and real constraints — where sustainability must function alongside tight schedules, limited resources and complex stakeholder environments.

With Greentime, sustainability becomes part of everyday event planning, rather than a parallel or isolated process.

The certification is built around

  • Mandatory sustainability requirements that ensure a credible minimum level
  • A structured digital tool supporting implementation and follow-up
  • Clear responsibility within the event organization
  • Documentation, review and continuous improvement over time

Together, this creates clarity, accountability and long-term impact.

Why certify?

Certification is not an end in itself. It is a tool to strengthen both operations and credibility. By certifying by Greentime, you can:

  • Strengthen credibility
Certification provides proof of actual achievement, demonstrating that concrete actions have been taken to reach sustainability objectives.
  • Increase internal commitment
A certification creates a shared goal across the organization and helps align teams around clear priorities.

  • Facilitate communication and marketing
You can clearly and credibly communicate your sustainability work to audiences, partners and stakeholders.

  • Attract customers, sponsors and partners
Many stakeholders actively seek collaborations with organizations that demonstrate real commitment to sustainability.

  • Build transferable skills
The knowledge and structure gained through certification can be applied to future events and projects.

We are with you on the journey

We know from experience that event organizations often operate under significant time pressure, with sustainability being just one of many responsibilities.

Through the certification process and our ongoing support, we help bring structure and clarity to sustainability work — turning it from an additional burden into something meaningful, manageable and integrated into daily operations.

Many certified events report concrete benefits, such as:

  • Reduced costs related to waste and littering

  • Improved working environments

  • Reduced food waste

  • Clearer roles and decision-making

In practice, this often leads to a better-functioning event overall — not just a more sustainable one.

The certification process – clear, structured and independent

Start-up

Together with a dedicated project manager, you are introduced to the tool, the certification requirements and the overall process in a video meeting. Together, you define a timeline and schedule review meetings to ensure steady progress throughout the certification journey.

01

Working in the tool

You gain access to Greentime’s digital sustainability planning tool, which includes approximately 130 structured questions covering key sustainability areas. Built-in guidance, examples and support functions help you work systematically and efficiently throughout the process.

02

Review meetings

During the certification process, you will have scheduled review meetings with Greentime’s sustainability advisors. They review progress on the mandatory requirements and provide feedback to support continuous improvement.

03

Independent review

Once completed, your documentation is submitted for certification. An independent auditor reviews all responses to verify that all 41 mandatory requirements are fulfilled, and at least 70% of the total possible score is achieved.

04

Certification

After a successful audit, the event is awarded the Certified Sustainable Event certification and is entitled to use the official certification logo. The certification provides a credible and transparent signal of verified sustainability work to stakeholders.

05

Site control

On-site verification

During the event, an independent auditor conducts an on-site visit to verify that planning and implementation align. This step is essential to maintaining the credibility of the certification. If significant deviations are identified, the auditor has the mandate to revoke the certification.

06

Follow-up

After the event, you receive a detailed audit report with observations and recommendations for improvement. This report forms a valuable basis for future sustainability work.

07

Evaluation and future planning

Together, we review the auditor’s findings, evaluate the process and set new sustainability goals for future events. This step is optional but recommended to support long-term improvement.

08

About the certification by Greentime

The Greentime Sustainability Certification is an independent third-party certification awarded to individual events that meet defined sustainability criteria. The criteria are implemented and documented through Greentime’s Sustainability Tool, which translates requirements into concrete actions suitable for real-world event operations.

The criteria

The certification criteria are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030) and are based on extensive experience from the event industry.

To achieve certification, the organizer must:

  • fulfil all 41 mandatory requirements, and

  • achieve at least 70% of the total possible score.

The certification is applicable across Europe and has been successfully applied internationally.

Download the criteria for 2026 here: Certification Sustainable Event – the 41 mandatory requirements 2026

Third-party certification

The Greentime Sustainability Certification follows established principles for third-party certification, including:

  • documented and assessable criteria

  • trained and independent auditors

  • separation between system owner and auditor

Auditors are required to:

  • have at least two years of experience in the event industry

  • hold university-level sustainability education

  • complete Greentime’s auditor training

  • shadow an approved audit before conducting audits independently

Sustainable Event Certification Reference Group

The certification criteria are developed and reviewed annually together with a reference group representing key stakeholders in the event industry.

Download the criteria for 2026 here: Certification Sustainable Event – the 41 mandatory requirements 2026

The 2026 reference group consists of:

  • Cecilia Perlind, Sponsorship and Event Sweden

  • Linnéa Bergman, Keep Sweden Clean
  • Anna Pesula, Liwlig
  • Cecilia Hall, ZeroMission

Our independent auditors

The certification is run by Greentime but it is the external auditors who review and approve the events and thus issue the certification and give you the right to the logo. All auditors have experience in the event industry, have attended sustainability training of at least 2 years, completed approved auditor training through Greentime and shadowed an event before they can conduct an audit on their own.
