The Global Goals

The SDGs are the world’s most ambitious sustainable development agenda, adopted by UN member states in 2015. The SDGs aim to achieve four main things by 2030: eradicate extreme poverty, reduce inequalities and injustices, promote peace and justice, and solve the climate crisis. This represents a joint action plan to create a better and more sustainable world for all.

The 17 goals are universal, integrated and indivisible – success is needed in all areas to achieve true sustainable development. The objectives cover the three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social and economic sustainability. This holistic approach to sustainability is key, where no dimension can be developed at the expense of another, and where no one should be left behind in the move towards a more sustainable world.

What are the Global Goals?

On September 25, 2015, UN member states adopted the 2030 Agenda, a universal agenda for sustainable development that includes seventeen global goals to be achieved by 2030. The SDGs in turn have 169 targets and more than 230 global indicators for implementation and monitoring.

The SDGs and the 2030 Agenda are the most ambitious sustainable development agreement ever adopted by world leaders. The concept of sustainable development integrates the three dimensions of sustainability: social, economic and environmental.

With the SDGs, world leaders have committed to achieving four great things by 2030:

  • To eradicate extreme poverty.
  • Reducing inequalities and injustices in the world.
  • Promoting peace and justice.
  • Solving the climate crisis

We are the first generation to eradicate poverty, and the last to fight climate change – and the SDGs are our common blueprint for creating a better and more sustainable world for all!

How were the Global Goals developed?

The development of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs has been led by the 193 UN member states. The process that resulted in the SDGs is the most transparent and inclusive process in UN history. Consultations, global calls and broad discussions have been held openly throughout the process – and never before have so many people been involved in a global decision-making process.

Representatives from governments, business, civil society and experts from all over the world participated in the process, and over 10 million people gave their voice through MyWorld2015.

Until 2030, you can continue to make your voice heard on the SDGs in MyWorld2030.

What is unique about the SDGs?

The Global Goals are:

  • Universal – meaning that they are addressed to all countries in the world and that all countries share responsibility for their implementation.
  • Integrated and indivisible – meaning that no objective can be achieved at the expense of another – and success in all objectives is required for successful implementation.
  • Inclusive – they have been developed through the most transparent and inclusive process in UN history.
  • Applies to everyone – the motto of the Global Goals is Leave no one behind. The SDGs will be implemented with particular attention to the most disadvantaged people and communities.
